Managing employees over the Christmas period

Christmas and annual holidays are a challenging time for employers. Employees take annual leave at the same time as holiday makers arrive at their holiday destinations, spending up large on everything from accommodation to paddle boards.

The key to managing employees over the holiday period is preparing in advance and understanding the regulations around leave, shift work, wages, entertainment and gifting. This ensures you are adequately staffed during periods of high demand and your team are informed and well rested after a busy year.

Here’s a few things to be aware of:

• Any close down period should be communicated to employees asap (14 days is the minimum notice period).

• When a public holiday falls on a day your employee would usually work, they are entitled to a paid day off, regardless of how long they have been working for you or whether they are permanent or casual employees.

• You can deduct 50% of the cost of a team Christmas party from your tax.

• If you choose to give employees cash as a gift (like a bonus), PAYE is payable on that cash.

On Thursday 15 November we are running a Business Boost workshop on this topic. Our employment specialist, April Jenkin will go through all these scenarios and will be on hand to answer any of your questions. To register or for more information follow the button below.
